World Environment Day and World Oceans Day Celebrations at Vilamendhoo Island Resort & Spa

The adventurer’s paradise of Vilamendhoo Island Resort & Spa will celebrate World Environment Day and World Oceans Day on the 5th and 8th of June, respectively.

The theme for World Environment Day 2021 is ‘Ecosystem Restoration,’ focusing on resetting our relationship with nature, whilst it is ‘The Ocean: Life and Livelihoods’ for World Oceans Day 2021, which reminds everyone of the vital role the oceans have in daily life.

To honour the United Nations’ global environmental initiatives, Vilamendhoo presents a programme of eco-inspired activities and events to foster interest and awareness and for guests and team members to participate.

On World Environment Day, the agenda will include a lagoon and house reef clean-up drive around the island to be participated by guests, Vilamendhoo team members, and staff from Euro-Divers Maldives.

An awareness-raising session will also follow the activity at Bonthi Bar, where associates from the Euro-Divers team will provide insight into environmental issues, such as global warming and ocean pollution, along with interesting facts about the marine life species flourishing in the waters of the Maldives.

On World Oceans Day, guests are invited to join one of the resort’s eco-conscious excursions where they can learn more about the Maldives’ diverse ecosystem and for a chance to meet various aquatic life creatures such as rays, fish, turtles, and whale sharks.

The day will be concluded with a special ‘Oceans Trivia Night’ that will allow dive fanatics and marine life enthusiasts to connect and learn some fun facts about the oceans and the diverse range of oceanic species.

World Environment Day and World Oceans Day are all about appreciating and conserving the environment and encouraging people to shift their thinking towards the planet for a greener and more sustainable tomorrow.

Environmentally-friendly Practices

Eco Bottles at Vilamendhoo Maldives

To minimise the use of plastics, we have our on-site bottling plant and produce our potable water for our guests and team members.

Glass water bottles are also used, instead of plastic water bottles, in our villas, bars and restaurants, which goes the same for our soda glass bottles in our minibars. To support this even further, we introduced our ECO-Bottle in 2019, an aluminium bottle sold to guests at a small charge that can be refilled with drinking water free of charge. Plastic drinking straws have also been replaced with eco-friendly alternatives. With these approaches, we are able to reduce our carbon footprint and the amount of single-use plastic waste discarded every year.

Supporting Local Communities

Supporting the local community is imperative for us at Vilamendhoo. We employ many Maldivians, with a majority of them from the island of South Ari Atoll. We also support various local charitable causes and community projects such as blood donation drives and sports events, and host cultural nights where we invite Maldivians from our neighbouring islands to join us at the resort.

In addition, we purchase our products from local suppliers and buy fresh fish directly from fishers from nearby islands, providing support to the local economy.

Marine Life & Biodiversity Conservation

Vilamendhoo Island Resort & Spa is dedicated to protecting our diverse eco-biology in South Ari Atoll and beyond. Initiatives to conserve our marine eco-system include:

Island and beach cleaning, a monthly drive that helps maintain the cleanliness of our beach and house reef.
Prohibiting illegal fishing and fish-feeding activities on our island.
Showing educational video materials on reception TVs and in-house channels to provide guests with valuable information on dos and don’ts on the island and in the sea.
